The growing use of membrane filtration has offered an effective treatment solution in areas with poor water quality, fast-growing populations and increased demand for safe drinking water. The interest in membrane technology is not only driven by its ability to deliver high-quality drinking water to consumers regardless of the source, but also by the dramatic cost reduction of this type of technology.

In recent years, membrane technology that guarantees the consistent removal of all particles, from viruses to harmful pathogens such as Cryptosporidium, has become available at competitive prices. This, along with end-users’ continued awareness of the benefits of membrane technology at every market level, ensures the scope of the membrane market will continue to expand.

According to a recent McIlvaine report, worldwide revenue of cross-flow membrane systems is expected to reach more than $10 billion in 2010. Half of that total will be for reverse osmosis systems, and the other half will be split between ultrafiltration and microfiltration.
