The Important Role of Disinfectants

   Terms & Conditions of Use

- By Neda Simeonova, editor

With millions of people worldwide lacking access to safe drinking water, it’s no surprise that interest in the elimination of microorganisms and harmful bacteria from water sources has existed for centuries.

It is well known that water disinfection removes, deactivates or kills pathogenic microorganisms, and can be attained by using either physical or chemical disinfectants. Emerging disinfection methods and technologies help provide high-quality safe drinking water and have greatly improved the quality of life; however, there are still occasional occurrences of disease-causing bacteria in today’s water systems. A wide variety of waterborne diseases are rampant, especially in developing countries where shortage of community water supplies, pollution and inadequate treatment continue to be unresolved. Additionally, there are frequent cases of gastrointestinal disease and even more serious problems in the food industry.

As a result, the implementation of different disinfectants and disinfection technologies such as chlorine, ozone and UV play an important role in the prevention of water-related illnesses and in improving the quality of life.

The use of chlorine will continue to be an integral part of the water disinfection process, but recent stringent regulations and health risks associated with disinfection byproducts have promoted research that seeks alternative disinfectant methods that will hopefully reduce environmental and health impacts.

No one disinfection method is completely free from problems, especially when lack of education leads to misuse. This is why, in a continued effort to deliver valuable information to water treatment industry professionals, Water Quality Products is pleased to bring you the 2007 edition of Water Disinfection—A Guide to Current Disinfection Technologies and Applications.

Within the pages of Water Disinfection, you will find selected articles featuring information on the use of UV, ozone and chlorine in various disinfection processes. We believe this comprehensive guide will offer valuable information and help you advance in this competitive market, as well as play an important role in improving quality of life.
