Bush Administration to Form Partnership to Expand Exports of Environmental Technologies

May 09, 2003

The U.S. Department of Commerce and the Water and Wastewater Equipment Manufacturers Association (WWEMA) signed an agreement that creates a public/private partnership to develop programs that encourage producers of environmental technologies to enter new foreign markets. Linda Conlin, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Trade Development, and Bob Wimmer, WWEMA Chairman-Elect, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will lead to a series of initiatives designed to increase U.S. exports in the water and wastewater sector.

"The Bush Administration is committed to creating jobs, and one important way to do that is through increasing exports," Conlin said. "The environmental technology sector is vital to the U.S. economy, and I look forward to a successful partnership with WWEMA that will help this industry remain competitive."

"WWEMA members have a long history of working with the Department of Commerce and benefiting from its products and services." Wimmer said. "This agreement will allow us to work closer together and better educate and assist WWEMA members in their export endeavors."

With the MOU, the Commerce Department and WWEMA agreed to explore ways to increase private sector awareness and effective use of federal export promotion programs, as well as to see how government programs can be more efficient in design and coordination. They also agreed to develop programs that encourage producers of environmental technologies, products and services to enter new foreign markets and to engage in joint activities that enhance U.S. exports of environmental technologies.
