The Federal Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act, which passed in 2011, will go into full effect on Jan. 4, 2014. It may come as a surprise that the plumbing industry, through Plumbing Manufacturers Intl. (PMI), was a primary proponent of getting this law passed, in the spirit of harmonizing regulations across the U.S.
Organizations work together to prepare the industry for the low-lead deadline

Certification combines testing to NSF/ANSI 61, ASSE 1061 and ASTM F2854 standards
NSF Intl. has certified the first gasket and sealing materials used with push-fit fittings to both the chloramine resistance and tensile strength performance requirements of ASSE 1061 and ASTM F2854.
New black fittings for water filtration/softener installations also are suitable for applications in plumbing repair and remodel, marine and RV. Speedfit black fittings are available in ¾- and 1-in. CTS sizes in a variety of configurations. These new additions are lead free, UV resistant and easy to install without the use of tools. Unique patented Lock & Twist technology, featuring a collet with stainless steel gripping teeth and an EPDM O-ring, ensures leak-free connections. Fittings are IAPMO approved, NSF certified and can be used with copper CPVC or PEX pipe.
The 3505 Gylon Stress Save low-load gasket is designed to seal lightweight metallic, plastic and fiberglass flanges. It creates a tight seal on both flat- and raised-face flanges and provides cold flow, creep resistance, chemical resistance, and high temperature and pressure capabilities. The gasket prevents leaching, delamination and foldover for easy installation and removal, and can be used in food, beverage, pharmaceutical and potable water systems.
New additions to the Speedfit advanced push-fit fitting system bolster an already full line of engineered plastic fitting products for use in plumbing systems and water treatment.
The new black fittings have been specifically designed for water filtration and softener installations; however, they are also suitable for applications in plumbing repair and remodeling, marine and R.V.
The black fittings will be available in ¾- and 1-in. CTS sizes in elbow, tee, union, male and stem elbow configurations.
