AWWA CEO David LaFrance thanks water professionals nationwide for keeping water safe for drinking
Dec. 16, 2014, marked the 40th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), which today includes regulations for more than 90 contaminants. American Water Works Assn. (AWWA) CEO David LaFrance issued the following statement to mark the occasion.
This patent-pending POU water filtration device produces drinking water without frequent maintenance, chemical additions or component replacement. The system traps and neutralizes contaminants through an ion exchange process. It processes enough water to support a family of six, includes built-in safe water storage and lasts for 10 years. The system meets the World Health Organization’s Household Water Treatment specifications for removing bacteria, protozoa and viruses.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but there is a good and a bad side of consumer awareness. Just a few months back I talked about the increase of consumer awareness about water quality with recent media reports: clever TV ads such as the GE Ecomagination ad, “Fishing for Water” that informs TV viewers about GE’s desalination technology, and the report listing the different certification marks for common household goods, including the NSF Mark and WQA’s Gold Seal Mark.

Antimicrobial technology for water filtration
Well-designed water distribution and cooling systems,
coupled with sound management and operational procedures, are essential to
control Legionella in industrial facilities—and a monitoring program
should not be considered as a replacement. However, most experts even those
ill-disposed towards routine Legionella monitoring, would agree that monitoring
should be considered if enough legionellosis risk factors apply to the system
in question. No management program, regardless of its treatment, maintenance or
monitoring components, can guarantee the absence of future legionellosis, but
prudent operational practices combined with ongoing review of risk factors will
allow facility managers to minimize exposure to Legionella and to its legal consequences.
Water specialists should make Legionella reduction a top priority
