Earthy, musty taste and smell in drinking water in two Southern California counties could persist for weeks

Some residents in parts of two Southern California counties may notice a musty taste and odor in their tap water, but it is an aesthetic problem caused by an algae bloom and is not a health hazard, according to water quality experts.

Officials at the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California said the taste and odor event is affecting tap water in eastern Los Angeles County communities, as well as southwestern San Bernardino County. The impacts may vary as local agencies blend imported water with local supplies.

Company announces initiative to support clean water, sanitation in African countries

The Coca-Cola Co. and the Coca-Cola Africa Foundation recently announced a $3.5 million commitment to the U.S. Water Partnership (USWP) to advance sustainable water access in African countries facing the greatest clean water challenges.

Bea Perez, the company's chief sustainability officer, made the announcement at the Rio+20 Conference in Brazil, where participants worked to shape policy on global poverty reduction, social equity advancement and environmental protection.

New Jersey American Water has rescinded its precautionary boil water advisory for its customers in sections of Bedminster, Chester Township, Far Hills, Peapack-Gladstone, Pottersville and Tewksbury. Customers no longer have to boil their water. Testing has concluded that the water meets or exceeds state and federal guidelines.

It is no longer necessary to boil your water before consumption; however, the following measures are strongly encouraged at this time:

Water provider secures top honor at American Water Works Assn.’s Annual Conference and Exposition

The American Water Works Assn. (AWWA) announced that the Fremont Department of Utilities of Fremont, Neb., has won the annual “Best of the Best” Water Taste Test. The event, composed of regional winners from water-tasting competitions across North America, was held at AWWA’s Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE12) in Dallas on June 12.

The city of Fremon, receives its water from nine groundwater wells in the High Plains Alluvial Aquifer, with an average well depth of 90 ft. The utility pumps 5 million gal per day through 160 miles of water main to serve 28,000 people.

Thousands are expected to benefit from campaign

About a month after Ethan Wolfe, a 6-year-old Phoenix boy, heard that people in Haiti had to drink "dirty water" every day, more than 4,600 people filled emptied water bottles with dollar bills and change as part of the Dirty Water campaign at Palmcroft Baptist Church.

The "Dirty Water fasting" campaign asked people to drink nothing but water for a month and donate the money they would have paid during that time for coffee, soda, juices and other drinks. The most recent count puts the collection at more than $105,000.
