EPA Fines Guam Waterworks $55,000

The Guam Waterworks Authority was handed another fine from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for failing to compose a plan for its wastewater and drinking water systems.

According to the Pacific Daily News, the water agency failed to comply with a 2003 court order that required the plan to be submitted on time. Guam Waterworks has accumulated $110,000 in penalties for failing to meet the deadline.

"The master plan will become the road map, showing what GWA will need to do over the next 20 years to provide safe drinking water for its residents and provide proper waste disposal," said Alexis Strauss, EPA director for water programs in the Pacific Southwest region, in a statement.

The water agency plans to submit the final master plan in the next 90 days. A consultant was hired by the water agency to develop a plan, which will need $730 million in improvements.
