More than 2,500 representatives of international organizations meet this week at World Water Week in Stockholm
More than 2,500 politicians, business leaders and representatives of international organizations are meeting this week at World Water Week in Stockholm to respond to global water challenges caused by rapid urbanization.
World Water Week is an annual global forum to review progress and promote partnerships on international processes related to water and development. In more than 100 events spread throughout the week, participants will meet under the theme “Responding to Global Challenges: Water in an Urbanizing World.” Their aim is to find sustainable solutions in balance with nature’s capacity when catering for the domestic, industrial, energy and agricultural needs of urbanization. This year, mayors, scientists, water professionals and business leaders from more than 100 countries join more than 30 high-level government officials to address these issues.
Speakers at the opening session included: Anders Berntell, executive director of the Stockholm International Water Institute; Gunilla Carlsson, minister of Swedish International Development Cooperation; Joan Clos, executive director of UN-HABITAT; Sheela Patel, Shack/Slum Dwellers Intl. chair; Stephen R. Carpenter, 2011 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate; Robinson Githae, minister for Nairobi Metropolitan Development in Kenya; and Rejoice Mabudafhasi, South African deputy minister of water and environment affairs.
During this week, the Stockholm Water Prize will be presented to Stephen R. Carpenter, professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, whose research on the interaction of humans and lakes has helped scientists and policymakers save lakes and their biodiversity. Other prizes to be presented are the Stockholm Junior Water Prize, which is given to one team from 28 competing nations, and the Stockholm Industry Water Award, which will be presented this year to Nestlé for its leadership and performance in improving water management in its internal operations.
