Headworks Bio Awarded Second STX Contract for Wastewater Treatment System on Cruise Ship
Allure of the Seas ship contract follows Oasis of the Seas, also built by STX Europe for Royal Caribbean Intl.
Headworks Bio, Inc., announced the signing of a contract with STX Europe in Turku, Finland, for the completion and commissioning of a wastewater treatment system for the Allure of the Seas cruise ship. The Allure of the Seas will be delivered to its owner, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, at the end of this year. Using moving bed bio-reactor and Return Activated Sludge technologies, the system is another step forward in the trend towards advanced onboard wastewater treatment and water reuse, the company said.
Allure of the Seas is the sister ship to the Oasis of the Seas, also built by STX Europe for Royal Caribbean Intl. It will have capacity for 5,400 guests onboard in 2,700 staterooms with a crew contingent of 2,160 members. All wastewater, including: black, accommodation grey, galley grey, food waste and laundry greywater generated onboard will be treated to a higher quality than the Alaska State Discharge Standards, the company said. The maiden voyage of this ship is scheduled for late October 2010 and all systems will be functional and ready for passengers prior to launch. The inaugural passenger cruise is set for December 2010 out of its homeport in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
"After our successful collaboration on the Oasis of the Seas, we look forward to working with Headworks Bio on the Allure of the Seas project,” said Sami Hautala, vice president of STX Europe. “What we expect from our suppliers is not only high-quality, reliable equipment, but also total commitment and professionalism in the handling and execution of the projects. The Headworks Bio team has demonstrated that they excel in all those areas."
