ITT Corp. announced that its WTW and OI Analytical instrument brands offer a range of measurement options for the detection of the potentially carcinogenic hexavalent chromium (chromium-6) in drinking water supplies. ITT Analytics’ range of technology and simple and convenient screening tests can assist U.S. water utilities in achieving fast and accurate measurement of this possibly cancer-causing element in water while meeting U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines. ITT Analytics will showcase its range of measurement options at booth 3761 at Pittcon 2011, being held March 14 to 17 in Atlanta.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the International Agency for Research on Cancer and EPA have determined that chromium-6 is a potential cancer-causing substance. Some studies have shown that animals exposed to chromium-6 in drinking water have an increased risk of gastrointestinal tumors. A recent study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit research organization, found chromium-6 in the drinking water of 31 out of 35 U.S cities tested. The highest levels were in samples from Norman, Okla.; Honolulu; and Riverside, Calif. EPA has advised U.S. water utilities to test more carefully for its presence in water supplies.

The OI Analytical DA 3500 discrete analyzer from ITT Analytics measures multiple analytes, such as chromium-6, phosphate and nitrite, concurrently, allowing samples to be analyzed immediately upon receipt in the laboratory. This colorimetric chemistry analyzer enables drinking water facilities to analyze samples for chromium-6 within 24 hours as required by EPA.
