NGWA Offers Course on Estimating Remediation Times for Monitored Neutral Attenuation

Attendees will learn to implement Natural Attenuation Software

The National Ground Water Assn. is offering a course on estimating remediation times for monitored natural attenuation (MNA) and contaminant source removal April 28 and 29 in Charlotte, N.C.

The course will present a decision-making framework and methodology for assessing MNA and estimating timeframes required for natural attenuation processes to lower contaminant concentrations and mass to predetermined regulatory goals.

The instructors have developed an interactive computer program, Natural Attenuation Software (NAS), to assess MNA at chlorinated ethenes or petroleum hydrocarbons sites. This software is designed to provide quantitative estimates for source zone treatment and the time of remediation using site-specific data and remediation goals.

In this course, participants will:

• Appropriately use NAS to implement MNA and source zone remediation at sites;
• Effectively analyze MNA protocol data to determine redox zonation;
• Determine the optimal level of source zone remediation to meet site-specific remediation objectives combined with an MNA-based remediation strategy; and
• Estimate the time of remediation under MNA with and without source zone remediation for LNAPL and DNAPL.

This course is best suited to regulators, site remedial project managers, engineers, hydrogeologists and scientists.

The instructors are Frank Chapelle, Ph.D., research hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Columbia, S.C,. and Mark Widdowson, Ph.D., professor at the Charles E. Via Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech.
