New members bring years of experience in food, water and public health to council
The NSF Intl. Council of Public Health Consultants (CPHC), which evaluates and approves NSF public health and environmental health standards, recently elected four new members: Kevin Besey, France Lemieux, Paul Olson and Thomas Vyles.
Besey, RS, MPA, DAAS, is director of the food and dairy division of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, where he manages the statewide food and dairy safety programs. He has a master’s degree in public administration from Western Michigan University and has worked in the food safety industry since 1977.
Lemiux, MCE, works with Health Canada, currently serving as head of the materials and treatment section of the Water, Air and Climate Change Bureau. She has experience in toxicology and drinking water treatment and participates on a number of standards committees relating to materials in contact with drinking water and plumbing products. She is a member of both the American Water Works Assn. and the International Water Assn. and has a master’s degree in civil engineering (water resources) from Norwich University.
Paul Olson, PE, is senior manager of standards for the American Water Works Assn. (AWWA) and oversees the AWWA Standards Program, which consists of more than 160 standards and 16 manuals covering water treatment and supply. He received his mechanical engineering degree from the University of Arizona and brings 17 years of experience in public health-related positions to the water and wastewater industries.
Vyles, MA, is a senior health specialist for the City of Plano Health Department in Plano, Texas, where he oversees codes and standards development for recreational water. Previously Vyles worked as a chemist for Safety-Kleen, a provider of environmental services, oil re-refining and responsible cleaning solutions. He has a master’s degree in organizational management, a bachelor’s degree in biology and brings 12 years of experience to the industry.
“The NSF [CPHC] is foundational to NSF’s mission. The work the CPHC does adds dignity and credibility to NSF and is what allows government, consumers and manufacturers to trust the NSF Mark,” said Richard Rabbideau, chair of NSF Intl.’s board of directors.
“These new members of [CPHC] bring extensive food and water safety expertise to our organization, and we look forward to working with them and the rest of the council to help protect human health worldwide,” said Kevan Lawlor, NSF Intl. president and CEO.
