MISTRAS Group Inc. has announced that Pedro Feres, president of Physical Acoustics South America, has been appointed Chairman of ISO/TC 135/SC9 for a six-year term starting July 1, 2007-07-01 and ending June 30, 2013. The SC 9 is the Acoustic Emission Sub Committee of the Technical Committee 135 of ISO-International Organization for Standardization.
ISO is a network of the National Standards Institute of 157 countries, on the basis of one member per country, with a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland coordinating the system. In 1946, delegates from 25 countries met in London and decided to create a new international organization, of which the object would be "to facilitate the international coordination and
unification of industrial standards". The new organization, ISO, officially began operations on February 23, 1947. Because "International Organization for Standardization" would have different abbreviations in different languages ("IOS" in English, "OIN" in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), it was decided at the outset to use a word derived from the Greek “isos”, meaning "equal".
As Chairman, Feres’ activities will be to coordinate the technical plan to drive the specifications of standardization around the world, in the specific case the Acoustic Emission standards.
Pedro Feres is a mechanical engineer with 21 years experience in acoustic emission, non-destructive testing, and non-intrusive techniques. He holds a Master Degree in Fracture Mechanics and is the author of a number of acoustic emission papers published in Europe, USA and Japan. He is also a member of IBP (Brazilian Institute of Petroleum and Gas), Chairman of ABENDE ́s Working Group for Acoustic Emission Qualification and Certification of Personnel. In addition, he is head of the Brazilian Delegation for the Non-destructive Testing at Mercosul Sector Committee CSM-24, and Chairman of ABNT ́s (Brazilian Society for Technical Standards) Acoustic Emission Standardization Committee. Pedro Feres is certified as Level III for Acoustic Emission Technique in compliance with ISO 9712, and was President of ABENDE (Brazilian Society for NDT) from March 2005 to March 2007.
