The storm may have passed, but for those affected by Hurricane Sandy this week, the challenge is only just beginning. With dozens killed, millions out of power and billions of dollars in damage in the country’s largest population center, it could be weeks or months before life returns to normal.
Water safety is critical after a storm causes flooding of this magnitude. Water and wastewater treatment plants across the region were inundated, meaning that boiled water and bottled water will be necessary until they are fully up and running again. Many utilities are asking those in affected areas to conserve water while damage is assessed.
Drinking water wells are also at risk, as floodwater could have swamped them with contaminants and pathogens. Any affected wells should be evaluated and disinfected before water is used for consumption or cleaning.
