SRP and Motorola Sign Agreement to Expand Joint Development, Marketing Efforts
Motorola and Salt River Project (SRP), a water and power utility based in metropolitan Phoenix, have signed a licensing agreement that gives Motorola responsibility for the future development and marketing for the SPATIA® Solution. This Web-based system enables commercial and industrial customers to reduce utility costs and improve operations through detailed management of utility usage.
This Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system creates a cost effective means to access data, monitor usage and control equipment -- even in difficult-to-read sites. The system also enables utility companies to better understand their power and water customers' usage by providing detailed load profiles.
"As competition increases in utility markets, understanding usage will be a critical component for success," said Karen Caldwell, director of Utility Solutions for the Motorola Market Solutions Division. "The SPATIA solution combines Motorola's expertise in communications technology and software development with the power of the Internet to create utility insight for our customers."
The SPATIA Solution features near real-time monitoring and control from a central location and aggregates utility usage, develops load profiles with benchmarking to set efficiency standards, and provides notification information from parameters set by the user.
Customers can select wireless and wire-line data access and transmission methods to monitor utility usage from across the enterprise. The system enables customers to create easily understood graphs and charts based on power- or water-use data they can access through secure Internet connections, email or File Transfer Protocol (FTP).
SRP originally developed the SPATIA solution to monitor and analyze data from its own remote and difficult-to-access water and power measurement points. Through SRP's initial development and marketing efforts, the system has evolved into a leading utility-information service for a wide variety of users and applications.
These include multi-site national retailers, energy service companies, power utilities, municipalities and irrigation districts located through out the western United States.
