Local water agencies and water wholesalers, the San Diego County Water Authority and the Metropolitan Water District, will hold a sprinkler controller swap on Sat., July 15, 2006. Customers of participating water agencies who are ready to exchange their old controller for a free state-of-the-art model must call 866/648-2925 to reserve their place. The swap will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. by appointment, at the San Diego County Water Authority headquarters at 4655 Overland Avenue in Kearny Mesa.
North County water agencies participating include Santa Fe Irrigation District, Vista Irrigation District, Vallecitos Water District, Rincon Del Diablo Municipal Water District, Valley Center Municipal Water District, Fallbrook Public Utility, Ramona Municipal Water District, San Dieguito Water District, and the cities of Escondido, Oceanside, Poway and Carlsbad.
Only 500 controllers will be distributed to registered participants. Water customers need a reservation number, their old controller and a copy of their water bill in order to participate. This program is sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Metropolitan) and the San Diego County Water Authority with grant funding from Proposition 13 through the California Department of Water Resources.
Smart controllers take the guesswork out of determining a lawn-watering schedule. These state-of-the-art devices monitor a garden or landscape’s environmental conditions and water plants accordingly. One study showed water savings of up to 40 gal per household per day, or about 10% of total water use.
The smart controller swap is part of a regional effort to heighten awareness of smart controllers and other new water-saving devices now being incentivized by Metropolitan and its member agencies. For more information, log on to www.bewaterwise.com.
