Fix a Leak Week 2014 to take place March 17 to 23, 2014

2014 EPA WaterSense Fix a Leak Week Chasing Leaks

The 2014 Fix a Leak Week theme is "Chasing Leaks." WaterSense is encouraging its partners to organize running races or other community events educating consumers to chase down leaks and stop wasting water during the its sixth annual Fix a Leak Week March 17 to 23, 2014. Several WaterSense partners across the country have planned races that feature running toilets and sprinting sprinklers to illustrate what can happen when leaks get out of control.

Correcting household leaks can save homeowners an average of more than 10,000 gal of water per year, or the amount of water in a typical backyard swimming pool. Finding and fixing leaks around the home can be as simple as check, twist and replace:

  • Check toilets for leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring into the tank; wait a few minutes and see if color appears in the bowl before you flush. If it does, there is a leak.
  • Twist on a new WaterSense labeled faucet aerator or showerhead, and tighten hose and pipe connections.
  • Replace fixtures if necessary with WaterSense labeled models, which are independently certified to use 20% less water and perform as well or better than standard models.

WaterSense partners and interested plumbers can use a variety of tools to promote a "Chasing Leaks" race or other Fix a Leak Week event. For more information about joining the effort, contact watersense@epa.gov or (866) 987-7367.
