Partnership will promote and recognize good practices among large water users and providers

The Water Environment Federation (WEF) announces a new partnership with the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS), an international group of like-minded organizations that promotes responsible use of water resources.

Passed last month by WEF’s Board of Trustees, the resolution formalizes the Federation’s participation in a 3-year plan to help develop a set of principles and good practices for large water users and providers, including industry and all types of water utilities.

“Insufficient and unsafe water supplies affect over a billion people worldwide and cause an estimated 1.6 million water-related deaths every year,” said WEF Vice President Paul Freedman. “When it comes to water, smart conservation, effective allocation, and wise use is essential. As professional stewards of the water environment, WEF has a responsibility to lead and help establish practices that will ensure a sustainable future for clean water and is why we are supporting the AWS.”

Specifically, WEF will provide a utility perspective and other water sector input in the development of global watershed certification and international water stewardship standards over the next three years. In addition, WEF will assist in efforts to secure funding for the AWS via cooperative agreements with agencies such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other institutions.

Formed to provide a global platform for the development of standards for water stewardship that will enable fair and sustainable management of freshwater resources, current AWS partners include The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, Pacific Institute, Watershed Stewardship Initiative, and Water Witness.
