Bottled Water Prices Increase in Houston

Businesses can be penalized for increasing prices in the wake of a disaster

Best Buy overcharges for water

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, some locals have experienced increased prices on necessities like bottled water. A Best Buy store outside Houston allegedly sold bottled water for nearly $43.

A Best Buy spokesman apologized for the incident and explained it as an error. “This was a big mistake on the park of a few employees at one store on Friday,” said Jeffrey Shelman of Best Buy.

Other businesses were reported selling bottled water for $8.50 per bottle or cases for $99. State law prohibits these price increases during crises, and the businesses face steep penalties of up to $250,000.
