AWWA ACE in Hand

June 30, 2016

It’s been one week since the show floor closed at the 2016 American Water Works Assn. Annual Conference and Expo, and we are still digesting information we gathered at McCormick Place in Chicago.

In the near future, we will be releasing some video coverage from the show floor. Members of our editorial team visited booths for interviews about new tech and talked to attendees of the show to get a feeling about what they found most interesting.

Among those visits was a discussion with Ride With Purpose, also known as The Water Buffalos. The group of motorcycle riders takes several trips each year to raise money for non-profits providing safe drinking water to the public. Collectively, the riders traveled more than 30,000 miles to get to Chicago for AWWA ACE.  Their efforts have been made all the more important by the goings-on in Flint, Mich., where we are still learning about the effects of lead in the city’s water.

Just recently, the CDC found blood lead levels were higher in the area’s children after the city switched its source from Detroit water to the Flint River. Those levels fell back down when the city returned to the Detroit water source. The measureable impact like that shows it is continually important that organizations like Ride With Purpose spread its message and push for safe drinking water.

What did you find interesting on the show floor at ACE? How big an impact do organizations like Ride With Purpose make on public awareness for water issues? Let us know at [email protected].
