ADA Makes Statement on CDC Fluoride Recommendations

Aug. 17, 2001
ADA President Dr. Robert Anderton issued the following statement on the Centers for Disease Control fluoride recommendations:

"The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention's (CDC) fluoride recommendations reinforce the safety and efficacy of using fluoride to prevent oral disease and underscore the need to provide community water fluoridation to more Americans. These recommendations also confirm the American Dental Association's (ADA) long held position that community water fluoridation is safe and effective in preventing dental decay in both children and adults. Community water fluoridation particularly benefits children and is critically important to those who don't receive regular dental care. Our hope is that federal, state and municipal governments will take their cue from the CDC and increase their efforts to bring fluoridated water to as many communities as possible."
