Massachusetts golf course to use Desalitech’s closed circuit desalination RO products
Desalitech, a provider of advanced water treatment solutions, won a competitive bid to supply a water purification system to the Kittansett Club golf course in Marion, Mass. Wells that have historically supplied essential irrigation water are being impacted by accelerating seawater intrusion.
"After researching the available technologies in water filtration in relation to the issues we were having with our well water at the Kittansett Club, it was clear that Desalitech offered the best solution and flexibility to help manage our water quality over other reverse osmosis (RO) units currently on the market," said John Kelly, golf course superintendent. "At the end of the day when we looked at cost of ownership, operational cost, efficiency and the unit's ability to manage varying salinity levels without upgrading equipment, Desalitech's system was at the top of our list."
Desalitech's closed circuit desalination (CCD) RO products save water and lower treatment costs by 20% to 60%. The CCD process maximizes permeate recovery, thereby reducing brine waste and conserving water resources while lowering energy consumption and increasing the flexibility and reliability of operations. Ideal for industrial and agricultural water treatment, including supply water purification, water reuse and wastewater treatment, CCD systems also are making an impact on municipal water treatment and desalination worldwide.
The Kittansett Club's CCD unit will treat 100 gal per minute of well water varying from 1,000 to 10,000 ppm dissolved salts. It is designed for maximum water utilization, capable of producing more than 9 gal of purified water from every 10 gal it is fed, thereby minimizing well withdrawals and reject flow. CCD units are in use in other similar agricultural projects.
"Our proprietary CCD process has the ability to adjust to varying feedwater conditions, while operating at over 90% recovery with a single-stage of reverse osmosis membrane elements," said Richard Stover, executive vice president for Desalitech. "We were the only bidder that could guarantee our system would perform as required if the feedwater salinity doubled."
