USDA Increases Water Quality Initiative

The initiative collaborates with landowners to implement conservation and sediment control practices

USDA expands watershed protection program

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the addition of 30 new watersheds to the National Water Quality Initiative (NWQI). The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) plans to invest more than $30 million in 2018 on watershed quality improvement efforts.

The NWQI will collaborate with farmers, ranchers and forest landowners to incorporate conservation practices aimed at improving water quality. Previous practices have included efforts to improve soil health, manage agricultural runoff, incorporate alternative irrigation systems and wetland restoration. With the addition of 30 new watersheds to the program in 2018, the NWQI will collaborate with landowners across 201 U.S. watersheds.
