Pool Safety Education

The National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF) has increased its delivery of pool and spa education globally to improve the health and safety of pools and patrons. Since 1984, 139 active NSPF instructors outside the U.S. have provided Certified Pool/Spa Operator (CPO) certification opportunities in 97 countries and certified more than 19,900 students.

In May, NSPF representatives and Consejo Superior de Normalización y Seguridad Integral en Piscinas members met with the Tarragona, Spain, governor in Barcelona, Spain. Attendees presented evidence on the minimum pool safety education requirements to a roundtable of peers.

In Ukraine, Ishtvan Kokhan represented NSPF at Aquatherm Kyiv by providing information on standards and requirements for public pools in the U.S., as well as how CPO certifications can benefit operators, patrons and facility owners, with an active question and answer session.

In Puerto Rico, NSPF held an instructor training course. Students from Canada, Dubai, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela became instructors. NSPF instructor Rudy Stankowitz also held the first CPO certification course in Guyana for the custodial staff at the Guyana Marriott Hotel Georgetown to prepare for the country’s upcoming Golden Jubilee.

“The CPO certification has such a long and incredible history in protecting swimmers at aquatic facilities throughout the world. I was extremely flattered at the opportunity to bring this program into the country of Guyana,” said Rudy Stankowitz, CEO and president of Aquatic Training & Consultants. “You could see the tremendous amount of pride and excitement in the faces of the individuals at this facility as they received their test results knowing that they were making swimming pool history in being the first in their entire country to earn this certification.”

Additionally, NSPF will display at a booth and offer an NSPF instructor course, CPO certification course, and marketing seminar at the SPLASH! Pool & Spa Trade Show Aug. 15 to 17 at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Center in Australia. Participants in the NSPF instructor course include candidates from Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Australia.

The Asociación De Profesionales de la Piscina A. C. (APPAC) will conduct a CPO certification course during the Expo Tecno Agua in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Aug. 31 to Sept. 2. NSPF has had a long-standing partnership with APPAC, which has trained more than 25 NSPF instructors.

NSPF intends to continue educating countries around the world about pool and spa operation. Keeping pools open and safe begins with providing knowledge and imparting skills to aquatic professionals. To learn more about bringing CPO certification to a new country, email [email protected].
