Washington City Replaces Residential Water Meters

Officials advised residents not to drink water

Spokane, Wash., is set to replace residential water meters in Hillyard where water was contaminated. According to The Spokesman-Review, the city advised residents in the contaminated area to not drink their water. Officials remain uncertain as to when the problem will be fixed.

City spokeswoman Marlene Feist said “the contamination affects about 100 to 120 properties,” according to The Spokesman-Review

According to the city, a commercial hydroseed vehicle used hydrants that contaminated the water with mulch and fertilizer Friday, July 26. According to The Spokesman-Review, some residents reported their water flow was gone, then Monday, July 29, the city said it is replacing residential water meters that have clogged. 

Residents will not be charged if the city replaces their meters, Feist said. According to The Spokesman-Review, the city will clean the impacted water meters. Residents with these issues may have a clogged filter in their meter. 

“The seed in the fibers in that hydroseed is clogging a lot of those filters, so we’re going through to replace the meters,” Feist said to The Spokesman-Review

According to city officials, the water is safe for irrigation and bathing but not for drinking or cooking. According to The Spokesman-Review, the city is waiting for more results to come back on the contaminated water.

“The city permits businesses to use its water through the hydrants,” Feist said to The Spokesman-Review. “Those businesses are regulated and must comply with certain rules, to do so, however. It is likely that the contamination was caused by one of the city’s customers who did not do something correctly.”

The city plans to investigate the backflow cause into the system. However, the first priority is making sure water is drinkable again for residents. According to The Spokesman-Review, water testing results were processed Monday but the city does not have a date as to when the water will be drinkable.
