Well owners may be at risk after hurricanes

The National Ground Water Assn. (NGWA) urged water treatment dealers and water well system professionals to reach out to customers in wake of recent hurricanes. According to NGWA, more than 750,000 or more private water wells may have been affected by flooding and damage related to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria and Matthew.

NGWA reiterates that water well owners should be educated on the dangers of water well contamination. Water professionals can offer disinfection, wellhead repair, well relocation and elevation, or other services.

The following numbers of private wells were tabulated for U.S. counties receiving at least 10 in. of rainfall during the hurricanes, according to NGWA:

  • Texas – 215, 906
  • Florida – 306,382
  • South Carolina – 92,477
  • North Carolina – 150,692

NGWA urges water well owners and water well system professionals to use its resources for hurricane recovery.
